Centers: Magnified and Stabilized

Date
2022-07
In Centers: Magnified and Stabilized, Vito Acconci's classic work, Centers (1971), is appropriated and updated for the era of artificial intelligence. AI amplifies the implicit motion it "sees" in his valiant attempt to point at himself while pointing at the viewer. His (our) gaze is centered, magnified, and ultimately stabilized via machine assistance. The work asks the question: following Krauss, if video is a narcissistic mirror, what does it mean when the machine produces the reflection?
